With summer approaching the same question always comes up. With all of the humidity, how do I avoid the frizz and keep my hair looking its best?

Before getting into recommending products it needs to be said that it’s important to maintain regular haircuts, approximately six weeks for women and four weeks for men. This helps to avoid split ends and keeps the hair at its healthiest. When the hair is healthy it will look better and frizz less.

The best thing to remember as summer approaches is that your hair will always try to revert to its natural state so it’s best to learn to work with it…embrace what you’ve got and use good products that are designed to keep the frizz at bay!

The “Elixir Ultime” from Kerastase is an excellent product for women that can be used before or after a blow dry; it’s contains essential oils that help with shine, strength and moisture. To help seal in the hold Kerastase’s ‘Sustanif Mouse” is fantastic; it’s has excellent hold but is also very workable so you won’t end up with crunchy or tacky-feeling hair. To style just apply one or two drops of the Elixir, and then use the mouse all over. If needed apply a tiny amount of Elixir to the ends after the blow dry. This will keep the hair looking soft and shiny without the greasy look or feel.

For those embracing their natural curl Bumble and Bumble is an excellent choice. A little “Defining Cream” separates and enhances the curl followed by the “Holding Foam” which gives a very soft and luxurious curl that should have enough hold to carry you through the day. Important note: the most common mistake made when air-drying or diffusing curly hair is touching it too much; a little scrunching of the ends while the hair is damp is the most you want to do. Wait for the hair to be 100% dry before playing with your hair, otherwise it will frizz.

For men, whether you just let the hair air-dry or if you use a blow-dryer the key word is natural. Pastes or products with a more natural feel have replaced the hard, shiny gels of the past. “Sumotech” from Bumble and Bumble is an extremely versatile product that keeps men looking stylish without looking like they’re trying to hard.

Sara has been a professional colorist for almost 6 years now, and is loved by all of the staff at Clive and Co. (especially when she brings her delicious cookies).

Sara has always been interested in hair and beauty. From putting on makeup as a kid to doing all of her friends’ hair for prom, there hasn’t been a time in her life that she wasn’t enjoying making people look beautiful. In her last year of high school, she was involved in modeling for a hair show and ended up falling in love with the technical side of hair design. Soon after she graduated, she enrolled in hair school and found a passion for hair color specifically. As an artist, the industry fed into her love of art and inspiration and the intricate formulations and techniquesmet a desire for challenge in her life.

Who or What inspires you and why?

People and my clients inspire me more than anything. The relationship between personality and personal fashion amazes me every day. I love finding a hair color that links the inner you to the outer you. My co-workers inspire me daily as well. They are amazing friends and fantastic artists who continually help me discover new perspectives.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

When it comes to celebrity hair, I tend to lean toward the darker shades when picking a favorite. Mila Kunis, is a brunette beauty I often use as an example of warm chocolate tones that accent her olive complexion. Although, my favorite acting talents are closer in the range of Robert Downey Jr. and Johnny Depp.

How often does someone bring in a picture of a certain hair style/color? What is it that they like most? How do you approach the consultation in order to give them what they like?

I love it when clients bring in pictures! It really helps me see what they are looking for and the difference between their current hair and what they want. With clients who are eager for a big change, I always like to dive a little deeper than just picking a particular color. My consultations consist of questions that look for the root as to why the client wants the change, how they want to be seen by their peers, what kind of environment they work in, how often they want to come into the salon, etc. A consultation should be similar to a conversation in a relationship, really listening to the person’s needs and wants and getting on the same level to apply them.

What products do you recommend the most and why?

Heat protection, heat protection, HEAT PROTECTION! It all begins and ends with heat protection. If you blow dry your hair or use heat tools then heat protection is a must have for the hair, especially to keep color fresh and vibrant.

When you have 30 minutes of free time- how do you pass your time?

I’m a bit of an organizer, so in my free time I am usually planning some sort of baking extravaganza or my next trip. Painting, baking and traveling are hard to fit into 30 minutes, but taking a break to do something you love, no matter how short the time, is worth it.

What do you love most about working for Clive and Company and why?

There are so many things I enjoy about working at Clive and Company. I love walking into a work place where I know I am supported by my co-workers and boss. The education Clive and Company has given me is beyond what I knew existed. I have the confidence of my training, the backing of my team and complete creative freedom to grow as a colourist in this company. Plus, loving the people I work with and my wonderful clients really helps me enjoy every day!

Stylist - Jennifer Huval" src="http://cliveandco.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/jennifer-copy.jpg?w=123&h=210" alt="Clive and Co. Stylist - Jennifer Huval" width="123" height="210" />Jennifer Huval is a stylist and educator at Clive and Co. She is a true asset to the staff at Clive and Co. and on April 21st will have been doing hair for 5 years! In Clive’s words, “You are officially a hairstylist!” (Clive says you can’t call yourself a hairstylist until you’ve been doing it for 5 years.)

Jennifer first realized she wanted to be a hairstylist during a mother daughter bonding time when her mom taught her how to pull her hair through a “frosting cap.” When she was 21 her hairstylist gave her the encouragement she needed to go to cosmetology school and find an apprenticeship somewhere respectable.

Who OR WHAT inspires you AND WHY?

The people I work with inspire me everyday. Whether it’s fashion or advice on life, they constantly keep me on my toes. Yoga has also inspired me to change my perception on life and how we fit into the world around us.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

I don’t necessarily have a favorite celebrity. Celebrities are so stylized that it’s hard to know whether it’s their own style or someone else’s you actually like. But if I had to choose: Zooey Deschanel because she has that quirky, sexy thing going on. And Mila Kunis because you can tell that she’s sure of herself and confident; she’s definitely someone I would want to learn a few things from.

How often does someone bring in a picture of a certain hair style/color? What is it that they like most? How do you approach the consultation in order to give them what they like?

50% of the time they bring in a picture and it’s what they already have. It’s just styled differently in the picture. I think what clients forget is that celebrities have hairstylists that touched up their hair before they hit the red carpet. And there is SO MUCH that happens in regards to styling and tweaking to get a photo to look “just right.” If everyone walked around with a stylists and a fan with multiple speeds, we would all look like we just stepped out of a photo.

What products do you recommend the most AND WHY?

Kérastase Shampoo and Conditioner and a heat protector. These are 3 products you CANNOT skimp on. If you are spending money to have beautiful color and your goal is healthy, shiny hair, why wouldn’t you use products to preserve it? You get what you pay for, and Kérastase products are worth the investment.

When you have 30 minutes of free time – how do you pass your time?

I want to be outside; either on a patio, walking my dog, or riding my bike. (I don’t have my bike yet…but very soon…and I will be doing that all the time! THAT’S A GOAL!) I want to be out enjoying life organically, the way we were intended to enjoy it, not cooped up indoor distracted by TV. I genuinely like hanging out with my husband and as an added bonus, we like to do a lot of the same things as well as trying new things and seeking new adventures.

What do you love most about working for Clive and Co. and why?

Where would I even begin? There are so many things that I love about this place from the people I work with to having an amazing boss we have to look up to and work beside. Clive creates an environment of honesty and respect. We actually all like hanging out with each other, which I hear is a rarity in most salons. I feel incredibly fortunate that I get to work around such positive people and that I can honestly say that I learned everything I know from Clive.

Stylist - Marie Berry" src="http://cliveandco.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/marieberry.png?w=640" alt="Clive and Co. Stylist - Marie Berry" />Marie Berry is currently the Salon Manager at Clive and Co., and through her leadership, she has brought the salon to an impeccable professional and efficient standard. Marie chose to embark upon an apprenticeship and career with Clive and Co. after completing her hairdressing education at the TONI&GUY Academy in Carrollton, Texas.

Marie has attended various basic and creative cutting courses across the country from Vidal Sassoon and has also received in-depth product knowledge through Bumble and bumble in New York. These classes were a great way to implement Marie’s thorough understanding of the Clive and Co. way.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a hairdresser/colorist?

In high school. I worked for a year then went to beauty school.

Who inspires you?

Clive Lamb, Jackie Kennedy Onasis, Elizabeth Taylor.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

I don’t have a favorite celebrity because I don’t really look to them for inspiration.

How often does someone bring in a picture of a certain hair style/color?

Once in a while: Victoria Beckham, Katie Holmes and Rhianna.

What products would you suggest to get this look?

For bobs, I can’t get enough of Kerastase Mousse Substantive and for textured styles I frequently recommend the Shu Uemura Shape Paste for finish.
When you have 30 minutes of free time – how do you pass your time?

I spend free time placing the salon orders, checking and responding to emails, checking our inventory counts. I also work and maintain our staff scheduling and pricing.

Fashion trends are created and showcased on the runways at fashion week. Taking the inspiration from the bourgeois runway looks from Bottega Veneta and Jean Paul Gaultier, inspired Clive to create a haircut that interpreted this updo runway trend in a way that it can be worn with shorter hair. This makes the style wearable for everybody, taking away the mystique that runway style is outlandish and unrealistic for every day wear.

The haircut is cut to create the illusion of a French Twist with height at the crown. The sides are disconnected to create a feeling of the hair being put up, leaving soft wisps to fall down around the ears. The front is accessorized by strong flashes of colour, in our case – blue and purple tones, that are also very prevalent on the current runways; this emphasizes the sweeping wrapped movement through the front of the haircut.

This inspirational photo shoot recently landed Clive and Co. on the cover of the March issue of Texas Stylist Magazine!

Abby started her training in London, England and decided to take her colouring knowledge to Dallas, Texas. When she came to Clive and Co. she started out as an apprentice and worked her way through Clive’s extensive and disciplined education program. She is now an integral member of the educational and leadership teams.

Clive and Co.’s dedication to education has brought Abby to where she is today.

Abby’s expansive knowledge of the Clive and Co. way is a direct reflection of her full appointment book and waiting list, making her the busiest colourist in the organization.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a hairdresser/colorist?

I took my first job when I was 12 in a salon as a “Saturday Girl” in England. I was responsible for the sweeping, shampooing, and assisting of the stylists on the weekend and from there, I was inspired.

Who inspires you?

I find inspiration in architecture, fashion designers, technology, nature and art. All of these things I pull inspiration from and create my own form of art within haircolour.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

Lady Gaga because she is fearless and takes her inspiration from things…not people.

How often does someone bring in a picture of a certain hair style/color?

Everyday, and usually my response is somewhere along the lines of “Let’s take this as a source of what you like but recreate your look with your pallet and skintone to fit.”

Are there any products you would recommend beyond any others?

My two favorite products are from Kérastase: Bain Chroma Riche and Masque Chroma Riche.

This shampoo and conditioning masque both provide color protection, add shine, protect the hair from UV damage and are both suitable for most any hair type, whether it is damaged or not.

When you have 30 minutes of free time – how do you pass your time?

At Work? Usually catching up on social media, looking at fashion/hair magazine, and breathing J At home, I stay pretty active, spend time with my family, walk the dog and SHOP!

Stylist - Marc Hebert" src="http://cliveandco.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/marc.png?w=640" alt="Clive and Co. Stylist - Marc Hebert" />Constantly striving for perfection and always pushing himself to the next level, Marc Hebert sought inspiration found his home at Clive and Co. Marc was immediately attracted to the discipline and consistent structure of the continuing education program. He began his education anew at Clive and Co. by reworking techniques and theories that originally molded his career.

Marc is currently the Clive and Co. Artistic Director helping facilitate the continuing education for both the Styling and Cutting departments. Education is paramount to the progression of Marc’s career. With this new venture, Marc is further able to share his appreciation for structured precision hair cutting and styling that he acquired while learning, teaching and growing at Clive and Co..

When did you first realize you wanted to be a hairdresser/colorist?

About 12 years ago I realized that I was unhappy not following my dream so I finally took the plunge.

Who inspires you?

I find my inspiration from a variety of sources, art, music, nature, etc. To me beauty and creativity is a product of being actively involved in life and the world around you. This allows for continual growth and endless number of places from which you can be inspired. If we’re being specific to hairdressing it’s from Clive, the owner of Clive and Company.

Who is your favorite celebrity and why?

I have innumerable actors and actresses that I admire for their acting ability. Outside of that I don’t look to celebrities for inspiration in the hairdressing sense. While it’s imperative to stay current with how celebrities are wearing their hair they are rarely a great source of inspiration creatively, as very few of them are willing to take risks with their appearance. Again, I think you can find more from the people on the streets, musicians, the ever-changing youth culture and of course from Europe.

How often does someone bring in a picture of a certain hair style/color?

It’s incredibly common for people to bring in pictures of celebrities which is why, as a hairstylist, you must stay up to date. The hard part is explaining to them why they can’t look like Angelina Jolie!

When you have 30 minutes of free time – how do you pass your time?

Almost all of my spare time is spent with Lyric, my six year old daughter, the greatest source of inspiration I’ve ever known.
